Review: New Country at the Den Theatre (March 4, 2016)

When Uncle Jim (played by Mark Roberts) first enters, he seems like a rambling homeless guy from off the street. He mentions how he had trouble with security getting in. Surprisingly, he turns out to be the most interesting character. His hilarious stories and charming manner show why his nephew (Justin Spears) chose to fly him in for his wedding weekend.  He is more than just a party clown, however. He goes on to show the darker, more forlorn parts of himself. In a very interesting reveal, Justin discloses that Uncle Jim actually writes all of the songs. This makes Justin seem even more shallow. While Spears is technically the country music star, it is Uncle Jim that is the real heart of this great show.

Catch New Country now at The Den Theatre through May 14th!
