Impressive and Hilarious! Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Second City Present The Art of Falling at Harris Theatre (June 15, 2016)

In one of the first scenes, Katie is being shown around her new office. One of the employees says he likes to get in some cardio at the office and sits on a stationary bike and begins to pedal. However, it’s not an actual stationary bike. It’s a dancer lying down holding his rear with his hands with his legs up being used as the handlebars to the audience’s delight.  All the furniture is actually dancers. A vending machine comprised of four people needs to be bumped to get out a Coke. The stairs are a series of dancers bent over at different heights. In a separate scene, six dancers stand side by side and represent a typewriter in action. It’s simultaneously impressive and funny.

For the improvisation scene, a couple in the front row are interviewed. The man describes his girlfriend as a puma. Two dancers then begin to expertly move around the stage like the big cats while the interviewer describes the animal. The girlfriend then says they like to watch 90210. The interviewer asks if they are time travelers! The dancers begin to act like high school girls gossiping and then getting into a fight. Finally, the boyfriend says his sewing machine is broken. The questioner declares that they really are time travelers! The dancers then proceed to move impressively quick like a sewing needle. The audience bursts into laughter as they then proceed to move frantically as if the machine was broken.

This collaboration is absolutely a success. It has all the great comedic writing and acting that has made the Second City famous. Also, it has all the grace and style of a Hubbard Street Dance Chicago performance. But the most amazing aspect is when the two combine to create something completely new and never seen before on stage. It’s definitely a must see and it’s truly a unique product of the world class entertainment scene in Chicago!
