The stage goes completely dark. Three people enter wearing lights on their heads. It’s a great visual as they search the cave. Suddenly, a creature dashes along the stage. It happens too fast to identify. The group is startled but continues their search. The creature darts through the audience and the leader shouts “What’s that?” Many of the audience members tonight are friends with the cast and they are already cracking up. They finally capture the creature and take it to the town vet.
The vet isn’t home but his wife and daughter put it in a cage. Watching Bat Boy jump around and make bat noises in the cage is one of the funniest parts of the show. The wife tries to talk to him, but he doesn’t understand. She then hums and then he starts humming along with her. It’s quite a hilarious scene.
It’s one of the best starts to a musical ever seen at The Den Theatre. The cast completely becomes their characters. Many of them play two characters of different genders. In some scenes, they simply take off a wig and become the other character. The crowd eats it up. Also, a live band is playing out of sight to accompany the fantastic singing on stage. It all comes together very well to make a very professional production.
