American Idiot is the stage adaptation of Green Day’s 2004 album by the same name. The show first ran on Broadway in 2010 and was nominated for a Tony Award in the category of Best Musical. As the audience takes their seats, TVs display current events. The news story of Milo Yiannopoulos twitter bashing Leslie Jones plays on one of the TV screens. This sets the political scene that American Idiot is revolting against. There are shorter clips in between scenes including one where Milo appears to be on his way to moving past his outlandish ways.
The small intimate space at the Prop Thtr is great for the softer songs and when the entire cast was singing. For the more rocking songs, the sound was a bit too quiet. More volume for the rhythm guitar, lead vocals, and especially the lead guitar on solos would increase the intensity of these strong songs.
The challenge of performing this production meant for a large theatre in such a small space was done well. Every inch of the stage was fully utilized and the choreography looked great, especially when the entire cast was on stage and dancing. The members of the ensemble who played guitar and violin created a great effect in making the music come to life.
