Tonight, Paul Marinaro is singing with Mike Allemana on guitar and John Sims on bass. In his first set, he sings “I’ve Got The World On A String”. It takes a certain level of charisma to pull of this song, and Marinaro definitely has a good amount. It sounds great in the intimate Winter’s Jazz Club, which opened on November 18, 2016. This makes it the newest jazz club in Chicago.
In the second set, Paul expertly sings “One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)”. Afterwards, he shares a story about Frank Sinatra. There were plans for Sinatra to sing this song with Carly Simon for a duets album. She declined because she felt the song glorified drinking and driving!
Along with playing many popular songs from the American Songbook, he also did a few originals. One of the best this night is called “Bittersweet Boyfriend” about an old girlfriend. She wants him back, which leads to one fantastic line. “You’re starving for my love, but I’ve lost my appetite.”
